It is very important that the first layer of your print is strongly connected to the printer’s build platform so that the remainder of your part can be built on this foundation. If you have issue with this, please check the following things to solve the problem.


  • Build platform is not level or too far away from the nozzle

The N-series printer bed has been pre-levelled in our factory except for N1 (due to different mechanical structure), so this part is only for N1. N1 includes an adjustable bed with four knobs that control the position of the bed. If your N1 has trouble getting the first layer to stick to the bed, the first thing you want to verify is that your N1’s bed is flat and level. To level the bed, go to 'Utilities' page on touchscreen and then click on the square shape icon at the top left corner of the touchscreen. Then follow the calibration instruction step by step. First, the extruder will move to one of the 4 corners of the build platform. Then you can use the feeler gauge (a flat metal piece) we provide to adjust the distance between the build platform and the extruder. Try slide the feeler in between the extruder and the platform carefully. If you feel no resistance at all, that means the gap is too wide and you can use the wing-nut under the platform to tighten the gap. If you feel too much resistance or even can’t slide the feeler in, that means the gap is too narrow and you can use the wing-nut under the platform to widen the gap till you can slide the feeler in. The distance shall be enough for the feeler to slide in but not too wide so it can move freely. Repeat this for the other 3 corners and the build platform is leveled.

As mentioned above, N2 and N2+ are pre-leveled. However, if the gap between platform and nozzle is too wide, you could also fail your print. If too wide, you can twist the Z-limit screw clockwise which can increase a little travel distance for the build platform in Z-direction. The Z-limit screw of N2 and N2+ is at the left front corner of the build plate. The one for N1 is at the back of the build plate both at the left side of the lead screw.

  • First layer is printing too fast

As you extrude the first layer of filament on top of the build platform, you want to make sure that plastic can properly bond to the surface before starting the next layer. If you print the first layer too fast, the plastic may not have time to bond to the build platform. For this reason, it is typically very useful to print the first layer at a slower speed so that the plastic has time to bond to the bed. ideaMaker provides a setting for this exact feature. If you click on “Advance” after choosing a template for slicing, you will see a setting labeled “First Layer Speed”. If you feel that your printer is moving too fast on the first layer, try reducing this setting.

  • Temperature or cooling settings

If you notice that the first layer seems to stick initially, but later separates from the print bed as it cools, it is possible caused by plastic shrinking. Plastic tends to shrink as it cools from a warm temperature to a cool temperature. When plastic shrinks, it tends to peel off from the build platform as it cools. It is important to keep this in mind as you print your first layer.

The N-series printers include a heated bed to help overcome this problem when print high-temperature materials like ABS and PC. If the bed it heated to maintain a temperature of 100℃ for the entire build platform, it will keep the first layer warm so that it does not shrink as much. Generally, PLA tends to adhere well to a bed that is heated to 60-70℃, while ABS generally works better if the bed is heated to 100-120℃. You can adjust these settings in ideaMaker by clicking “Advance” then selecting the Cooling tab. Click “Manual Control”, and then edit the temperature of the bed you want.

However, the heat bed may go wrong also. If the heat bed is not heating, check the following things please. Also please use a proper thermal meter to measure the heat bed temperature. DO NOT USE YOUR HAND!

  1. If the temperature on the screen is abnormal that may because that the sensor cable is loose. Tighten the cable.

      2. If the temperature on the screen is close to the ordinary temperature that may due to the heat cable. Tighten the cable.


  • Brims and Rafts

If all above can’t solve the problem, it probably because the first layer of your print does not have enough surface area to stick to the build platform surface. ideaMaker includes several options that can help increase this surface area to provide a larger surface to stick to the print bed. One of these options is called a “Brim.” The Brim adds extra rings around the exterior of your part, similar to how a brim of a hat increases the circumference of the hat. This option can be enabled by going to the “Raft” after you select a template for your part. ideaMaker also allows users to add a Raft under their part, which can also be used to provide a larger surface for bed adhesion.
